Long Island Columbus Day Parade

The Order Sons of Italy in America will sponsor the Long Island Columbus Day Parade in Huntington on Sunday, October 9, 2005.  Starting time is 12:30 pm beginning at YMCA and Park Avenue proceeding west down Main Street to West Neck Road and to Gerard Street.  Parade participants from Nassau and Suffolk counties will be honoring Grand Marshals, Suffolk County Executive Steve Leavy and Nassau County Executive Thomas R. Suozzi.

Over 30 lodges will be marching with pride as we celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the founding of the Order by Dr. Vincenzo Sellaro.  This parade will bring the Italian American pride and presence to downtown Huntington during the annual Fall Festival celebration weekend that takes place from Friday evening October 7th to Monday October 10th in Heckscher Park.

New York City Columbus Day Parade

The Order Sons of Italy in America will march in the New York City Columbus Day Parade on Monday, October 10, 2005.  Antonin Scalia, Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court, will be Grand Marshal of Manhattan’s 2005 Columbus Day Parade.  The parade is the largest Columbus Day event in the world and will be held on New York’s Fifth Avenue.

Justice Scalia is the first American of Italian ancestry to serve on the Supreme Court.  His majority and dissenting opinions command admiration and respect for their intellectual rigor among people from all sides of the political landscape.  He is a great Italian-American whose achievements are a source of inspiration and pride.

In accepting the invitation, Justice Scalia remarked, “This is the top of the hill, to be Grand Marshal in your hometown.  I marched down Fifth Avenue many times as part of Xavier High School’s Regiment.  For an Italian kid from Queens, there could be no greater thrill than to march one last time, as Grand Marshal of the Columbus Day Parade.”

The Columbus Citizens Foundation is the proud founder of the Annual Columbus Day Parade. The Foundation is composed of more than 500 of the most prominent men and women of Italian heritage who have made significant contributions in the fields of Science, Law, Business, Government, Education and the Arts.

This wonderful parade celebrates the "discovery" of America by Christopher Columbus in 1492.  The parade starts on 5th Ave at 44th St and goes up to 79th St, then heads east to 3rd Ave.

Whether it be on Long Island  … in New York City … or in a local town in your area, show your Italian pride and march in one of the hundreds of Columbus Day Parades being held all over the country.
